Ingredients

Cold foam
  • 1/2 cup cold fat-free milk 120 ml, straight from the refrigerator
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla syrup 10 ml; standard sweetened coffee syrup
For serving
  • prepared iced coffee and ice optional; enough for two drinks, not included in the foam nutrition

Equipment

  • Handheld milk frother
  • Narrow 16-oz jar or frothing pitcher Leave plenty of room for expansion.
  • Measuring cup and teaspoon
  • Two serving glasses

Instructions

  1. Have two glasses of prepared iced coffee and ice ready, leaving room above each for foam. Keep the milk refrigerated until needed.
  2. Pour the cold milk and vanilla syrup into a clean narrow 16-oz jar or frothing pitcher. The container should be much taller than the liquid level so the foam can expand.
  3. Put the whisk just under the surface before switching it on. Froth for about 20–40 seconds, moving it gently near the surface to introduce air without splashing. Lower it slightly for a brief finish until the bubbles look finer. Stop when the milk has expanded and is softly pourable; exact timing depends on the frother.
  4. Switch the frother off before lifting it out. Gently tap the container to settle large bubbles, then divide the foam over the two drinks. Serve immediately; some gradual settling into the coffee is normal.

Notes

Texture: This is a light milk foam, not a heavy-cream whipped topping. Frother strength, container shape and milk temperature change the result. Use the texture cue rather than a fixed timer.
Storage: Make the foam near serving time for the best texture. Keep unused milk and mixture at 40°F (4°C) or below, within the milk’s remaining storage life. Keep cumulative room-temperature time below 2 hours, or 1 hour above 90°F (32°C).
Nutrition: Estimated from 120 ml Horizon fat-free milk and 10 ml Monin standard vanilla syrup, divided by two. Includes syrup and excludes coffee, ice and additional sweeteners. Product labels vary.
Cost: Illustrative US$0.50 batch estimate: milk about US$0.32 using a sample US$5/half-gallon price, plus syrup about US$0.18 using a sample US$13.50/750-ml bottle. Counts only the quantities used and excludes tax, delivery and energy.
