Ingredients

Oatmeal bake
  • 2 cups old-fashioned rolled oats 160 g; not steel-cut
  • 2 cups 2% milk 480 mL
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 cups small-diced unpeeled apples 250 g after coring; about 1/4-inch dice; wash before cutting
  • 1/4 cup pure maple syrup 60 mL / about 80 g
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter 28 g, melted and slightly cooled; divided
  • 2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp fine salt

Equipment

  • 1 8-inch square baking dish about 2-quart capacity
  • 1 Large mixing bowl
  • 1 Whisk and spatula
  • 1 Measuring cups and spoons
  • 1 Knife and cutting board
  • 1 Food thermometer to check the center
  • 1 Pastry brush optional, for greasing

Instructions

  1. Heat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease an 8-inch square baking dish with 1 teaspoon of the measured melted butter.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk the milk, eggs, maple syrup and remaining 5 teaspoons melted butter until evenly combined. Whisk in the cinnamon, baking powder and salt, breaking up any visible clumps.
  3. Stir in the rolled oats and diced apples. Scrape the mixture into the prepared dish, distribute the apples evenly and level the surface. Bake promptly after mixing.
  4. Bake for 40–45 minutes, until the edges are lightly golden, the apples are tender and the center is set without liquid pooling when gently pressed. A food thermometer inserted into the center should register at least 160°F (71°C). If needed, continue baking in 5-minute intervals; pan material and ovens affect timing.
  5. Let the oatmeal rest for 10 minutes before dividing into six portions. Serve warm with a spoon; it becomes easier to lift as squares after cooling.

Notes

Texture: This is a tender oatmeal bake, not a cake. Use old-fashioned rolled oats; steel-cut oats are not a direct substitution.
Storage: Refrigerate in shallow covered containers within 2 hours, or 1 hour above 90°F. Keep at 40°F or below and use within 3–4 days. Freeze extra portions for longer storage. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator and reheat to 165°F in the center.
Nutrition: Approximate values for one-sixth of the plain recipe, calculated from representative ingredient labels and food data. Brands, apple size and optional toppings change the result.
Estimated cost: About $3.50 for the whole six-serving recipe, or $0.58 per portion, using the portions of ingredients needed. This USD estimate excludes tax, delivery, electricity and optional toppings; prices vary by location and brand.
Video: The Cooking Foodie demonstrates the same apple-and-oat oven-baking method. Its version also includes applesauce, Greek yogurt, vanilla and optional nuts, uses less cinnamon and more maple syrup, and has a different milk ratio. Follow this card’s quantities.
